English is a second language, irrespective of its standard of teaching and availability of English in the ambience and exposure and access to the language.Methods of language teaching have been influenced by a variety of extant social, political, and psychological factors. There are several methods of English language teaching and the direct method is one of them.Direct method is also known as a natural and anti-grammatical method, it facilitates the active participation of students. This method builds a direct relationship/association between words and ideas, experiences, and language without any help from the learners mother tongue language.Disadvantages of Direct Method of teaching:It requires ample use of audio-visual aids which are not available in every school.Grammar is taught inductively so it is quite difficult to put it into practice, only everyday vocabulary and phrases are taught.It neglects reading and writing and focuses on speaking skills and classroom interaction is conducted exclusively in the target language.Overuse of this method would be detrimental because it not only rejects the mother tongue of the learners but also puts heavy demands on the teachers.Thus, it is concluded that students do not acquire good pronunciation skills and knowledge of phonetics, is not true about the disadvantage of the Direct Method of teaching as the Direct Method focuses on speaking skills which help students in acquiring good pronunciation skills and knowledge of phonetics.
