A map is a representation of the earth on a flat surface. Maps are very much used by motorists, defence personnel, tourists, and so on. But to use a map, it is necessary that one knows how to read a map as the map has its own language. A map cannot be meaningful unless the reader is able to make out what the map contains. Map literacy is essential for understanding maps. Activities that a teacher can give to the students while teaching about map skills are as follows:The teacher can ask the students to identify the geographical setting by looking at the colours of the map.The teacher can ask the students to locate different places on a map.The teacher can ask the students to identify the scale of a given map and ask them to calculate the distance between any two places.The teacher can ask the students to identify directions through a map.From the above, it is clear that mapping skills in EVS help develop ?understanding of the relative position of places.
