The main objective of teaching and learning EVS is to raise awareness and understanding of children about their environment.EVS curriculum has been created using a child-centered approach to themes that provide a common interface of issues in social studies, science, and environmental education.Themes in EVS syllabus- The syllabus for classes III to V is organized around 6 main themes as listed below, the main theme of "Family and Friends" is divided into 4 sub-themes:Family and FriendsRelationshipsWork and playAnimalsPlantsFoodShelterWaterTravelThings we make and do."Plants" and "animals" have been included under the theme "Family and friends" to emphasize how humans have a strong relationship with them and to provide a holistic and integrated scientific and social perspective on studying them. Traditionally, plants and animals have been presented as separate categories now it is attempted to place them in a social and cultural context here.Hence, it is concluded that "Animals and plants" is the subtheme of the proposed themes of the EVS syllabus. Whereas all the other are main themes of the EVS syllabus.
