Which major community was converted into industrial workers in the 20th century?
Before the rise of industries, there were basically two major class of people, one was engaged in trade and craft while the other in agrarian activities. Upon the advent of the industrial revolution, the demand for labour was increased as the people already engaged in trade and craft were naturally consumed or merged with the growing industries. The additional demand was majority met by the agrarian community. Over the years, it has been observed that the rise in industrialization directly corresponds to a shrinking agrarian labour force. Agrarian were either directly employed as labour or become the direct supplier of commercial goods, in the form of plantation crops for example- Indigo in India. Along with the time the second category soon lost stream due to rapid commercialization and were eventually absorbed as a labour force in the industries. Hence, it is clear that Farmers and artisans were the major community that was converted into industrial workers in the 20th century.
