Gibberellins was discovered by the Japanese scientist ____ in the year 1926.

A.
Kurosawa
B.
Charles Darwin
C.
Antosova
D.
None of these

Solution:

The correct answer is Kurosawa. Explanation:In an attempt to find the reason for rice seedlings grew taller and looked thin and pale when the seedlings are infected by the fungus Gibberella fujikuroi, A Japanese scientist Kurosawa in 1926 found a filtered extract of this fungus which could cause symptoms of Bakkane disease (also called as foolish disease in rice) in rice seedlings. In 1935, Yabuta isolated the active substance which was quite heat stable named it as Gibberellin. Gibberellins have a profound influence on the regulation of growth and development in plants. Gibberellins are found in all parts of plant including shoots, roots, leaves, flower, petals, anthers and seeds. Reproductive parts of a plant contain much higher concentrations of gibberellins than the vegetative parts. Gibberellins are responsible for loosening cell wall and cell enlargement. Immature seeds are rich in gibberellins whereas in mature seeds the gibberellins tend to form from their derivatives. Additional Information Growth HarmoneDiscoveryAuxinF. W. WentCytokininC.
