Who is known as the 'Father of Green Revolution' in India?
The correct answer is M. S. Swaminathan. The green revolution started in the late 1960s in Punjab. India was on the border of mass famine. At that time Indian minister of agriculture M. S. Swaminathan invited Norman Borlaug to India to advise regarding agriculture. The movement lasted till 1978 and saw great success. India is mainly based on agriculture but during the time of British rule, the country saw many famines. Thus to boost agriculture and to make the country food sufficient this movement was started. High-yielding variety (HYV) seeds were introduced in agriculture. It was combined with better and efficient irrigation methods and the use of fertilizers and tractors. The use of high-yielding variety seeds was first used for the irrigation of wheat. The aim was to produce rust-resistant varieties of wheat and make the country self-sufficient in it. This was a great success as the production of wheat rose to 55 million tonnes in 1990 which was just 11 million tonnes in 1960.
