Vocabulary refers to the set of words an individual uses as a tool for communication. It is a collection of familiar words used or understood by an individual or group of people. There are mainly two types of vocabulary which include Active and Passive vocabulary.Active vocabulary refers to a set of words that we use in different contexts and understand their meanings and usages. These words are regularly used and clearly understood by the learners while speaking and writing.Passive vocabulary refers to the set of words that we use when we listen to them and read them as these words can't be recalled and used easily and frequently. One has an idea of or can guess the meaning of these words but cannot use them confidently.Our active vocabulary is more limited (smaller) than our passive vocabulary. Students try their best to increase the repertoire of both active and passive vocabulary and gradually try to convert their passive into their active vocabulary.Hence, it could be concluded that Passive vocabularies are words that we use when we listen to them and read them.
