Learning a language involves the four basic foundational skills of language which are listening-speaking-reading-writing. These four processes are integrated with each other.Listening is the most important skill to promote active communication. It is the ability to accurately Identify the sounds of speech to interpret messages for meaningful communication. Understanding the meaning conveyed by keywords, stress and intonation are the most appropriate characteristics of listening as under listening activity, sounds are recognized and meanings are deduced from them. It is a prerequisite to learning all the other skills in the language. It is a process of decoding the sounds that one hears in a linear fashion, starting from the smallest meaningful units to complete texts.Language learning starts from 'listening' as first we listen in order to assimilate information or to access messages through spoken word. Listening involves both social and cognitive processes - that is, our relationships with people and the way we structure our internal knowledge.
