Dr. Michael Phillip West's 'New Method' of teaching English is a method that was based on three elements namely reading, readers with vocabulary, and the use of the native language judiciously. Dr. West had done his research on the English language as a second language in India and developed it as a response against teaching formal Grammar and the direct method of teaching. This method focuses on the importance of reading skills. West believed that silent reading is the key to proficiency and that exercises in reading comprehension would enable proficiency in speech and writing.West emphasizes that children can improve their language by reading printed English material.
