Question Bank - General Science

Here's the question bank on all the general science topics.

A cell is unable to synthesize lipids. Which of its cell organelles might be defective?

A.
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
B.
Golgi bodies
C.
Lysosomes
D.
Mitochondria

Solution:

Explanation:Cell:The cell is the structural and functional unit of life.It is the smallest basic unit which supports life. The cell was discovered by Robert hook.On the basis of complexity, cells are divided into prokaryotic and eukaryotic.Animal cells and plant cells have different compositions. The constituents of the cell are called cell organelles.Every cell has the primary three components - nucleus, cell membrane and cytoplasm.Cell organelles:Endoplasmic Reticulum:ER is a membranous cell organelle. There are two types of endoplasmic reticulum due to the presence of ribosomes it is rough or in its absence it is smooth. It shares its part of the membrane with that of the nucleus.SER produces vital lipids that are required for the body's functioning.RER also helps in the synthesis of fats and lipids.Lysosomes:Lysosomes are also known as suicide bags. They help in excreting the waste materials and the dead cell organelles from the cell. They can eat themselves out.Mitochondria:It is the powerhouse of the cell.It converts adenosine triphosphate molecule to adenosine diphosphate and phosphate ion and vice-versa to generate energy. It is also called the energy currency of the cell.Golgi body:It is composed of a folded body.It searches the protein sequence of amino acids for the special codes in the process of protein synthesis.Golgi body stores proteins as well.
